WhatsApp releases a web app for Chrome browser

A little later than expected, but WhatsApp is finally getting a web version (sort of). While it might not be an ideal web app that one would want from Whatsapp, but it will do for now.

Available now for WhatsApp for Android users, the web version just mirrors the conversations from the Android app to the web app, so both Android phone and the device from which you are accessing the web app must be connected to the internet for the current system to work.

“Our web client is simply an extension of your phone: the web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device — this means all of your messages still live on your phone,” WhatsApp noted in a blog post.

You will need the latest version of WhatsApp for Android, which is 2.11.500, to install and use the web client. This version is being rolled-out via Google Play right now and will reach your Android smartphone shortly. Also, the web version of WhatsApp currently works only with Google Chrome browser, but support for other web browsers is coming soon.

  • Open the updated version of WhatsApp for Android on your phone.
  • Now go to your computer and open https://web.whatsapp.com in Google Chrome browser. You will see a QR code.
  • Now, go to the WhatsApp menu on your phone, you will see WhatsApp web option, select it and scan the code show in the Chrome browser.
  • Voila, WhatsApp web version is now running on your computer.
